Castle Vanian Halloween Special: Top 5 Scarecrow Movies

The problem with making a list of Top 5 Scarecrow Movies is finding decent scarecrow movies. Until we started hunting them down this summer, ready for Halloween, I had no idea how many terrible scarecrow movies there are! It's surprising because it seems like such an easy trope for filmmakers, with so much potential for great imagery.

So how have so many gone so wrong?!

That, I can't answer. I can only offer you our the five scarecrow movies we considered the best of the lot.

Top 5 Scarecrow Movies

5. Scarecrow (2002)

Scarecrow is a camp little horror movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. The scarecrow wields sarcasm like a weapon and knows how to strike a killer pose while he does it. It's not that scary, but it's a lot of fun.

4. Messengers 2: The Scarecrow (2009)

Messengers 2 is an underrated horror movie with solid plot, good actors, and decent effects. The scarecrow is creepy, dishing out some nasty, well-deserved deaths. It sometimes feels bleak but has a happy(ish) ending.

3. Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003)

Teen slasher meets creature feature in this sequel. The Creeper might not be a scarecrow but he has the right look and even poses as one to fool his prey. It has excellent imagery, savage deaths, and touches on serious issues like homophobia and racism while providing laughs in unexpected places.

2. Scarecrows (1988)

Scarecrows is essentially a bank heist movie. There are several very effective scarecrows in this one who mimic the voices of their prey's loved ones to taunt them before killing them. It has mercenaries, banter, plenty of action, and scarecrows that multiply like zombies.

1. Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)

Undisputedly the best scarecrow movie out there, which is surprising considering it was made for TV and is light on the gore. The scarecrow is tortured, rather than scary, and just wants justice for the wrongs done to him. It's a heart-breaking movie that exposes the horrors of society in a way that will haunt you long after the credits roll.
